Because of great differences in elevation, Montana Weather is diverse. The northeast part of Montana is relatively flat, while the rest of the state is mountainous. The weather west of the mountains is milder than the rest of the state in both summer and winter, although it is also cloudier, and similar to the climate of the states to its west.

Incredible cold can occur during the winter in the northeast part of Montana, with temperatures well below 0°F. The rest of state isn't immune from cold weather in the winter, however; Montana is a cold weather state for much of the year. Hot weather can occur in the east and south in the summer, with temperatures sometimes above 100 °F.

Rain and snow is far heavier and more frequent in the mountains, but snow hits all of state often, with most cities getting 30-50 inches a year of snow. Hail is the most prevalent weather danger; tornadoes are very rare.
