Minnesota Weather is colder in the north, and a little warmer in the south. Temperatures in the area near Lake Superior are milder in both summer and winter. But no mater where you are in the state, Minnesota is famous for its cold weather in the winter. Areas in the north average nearly 70 inches a year of snow, while areas in the west and south taper off to 40 inches a year. The state averages approximately 2 blizzards a year.

Summers are relatively mild, although prolonged periods of hot weather can occur when tropical airflows from the Gulf of Mexico are dominant. Approximately 45 thunderstorms a year occur in the southern part of the state, while 30 occur near the Canadian border. Windstorms, hail, and dangerous tornadoes can accompany these thunderstorms. Tornadoes are also more prevalent in the south.
