South Dakota Weather is hot in the summer, and very cold in the winter. Humidity is low, year-round, often leading to wide ranges between daily high and low temperatures.

Precipitation levels are low in the southeast (about 25 inches a year), and even lower in the northwest (around 15 inches). Heavy snows are more typical in the end of fall and the beginning of spring, as winters are very dry.

Thunderstorms are frequent in the summer, sometimes causing damage. Tornadoes are common and dangerous in the east, and can occur in the other areas of South Dakota.
